Artist's Statement I know I promised I would draw a real cartoon again soon but, instead, I did not. As soon as I lost the external incentive of a deadline, I ceased drawing any cartoons or having any cartoon ideas at all. A colleague of mine pointed out, “Maybe you need a vacation.” I concur. But spazz not, loyal readers!—this is not the end of The Pain, only a hiatus, like the one I took a few years ago. I will be taking a little time off—maybe just a few weeks, maybe a couple of months--during which I’ll be putting together my third book, collecting political cartoons 2004-2009, which will be published by Fantagraphics books in late summer. (So for those of you who offered lodgings, beer, and other enticements on the road trip, August is probably the time to get out the air mattress and stock up on supplies.) I will also be a regular contributor the New York Times's upcoming "Happy Days" series, so you can watch for more my essays and cartoons there. In the meantime, there are almost ten years’ worth of archives on this site with which to divert yourselves, and if you have exhausted those you can always go to on abebooks.com to find absurdly cheap copies of my first book, The Pain—When Will It End?, collecting another decade’s worth of non-political cartoons far funnier than, if not as well drawn as, my political work. For New York area readers, I'll be appearing at Bob Sikoryak's "Carousel" events on Thursday, April 30th. Details below. Admission is $25 for two with the below postcard, so if you want to go let me know and I'll mail you one.
Yes I am still planning to offer Pain T-shirts and mugs. I am not so good with commercial matters and it's taking me a while to work out the practicalities. If you want to provide some external incentive for me to draw stuff, our donation button is directly below. |
