Yet another cartoon inspired by
my weekend in New York with Chris, who is depicted as my drinking companion
in this cartoon. It occurred to us, while vaguely watching the surreal and
terrifying CNN headlines on a barroom TV with the volume off, that Israel
was rolling tanks into Palestine and America was about to invade Iraq for
no clear reason and yet there we sat, in a city that might be incinerated
any day, drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon, Charlie Daniels was playing on the jukebox,
everything was fine. The strangest and creepiest thing about this new world
we live in is that that it does still seem normal, even though the
country has turned into a police state out of a Philip K. Dick novel, with
the unelected halfwit son of a former president foisted off on us as our leader,
an Orwellian "Patriot Act" that's repealed the Bill of Rights, and
we're now indefinitely at war against some nameless and unspecified enemy.
Yes, in case you're wondering, that is Uncle Sam in the background there,
out of costume, lifting a shot to his lips with shaking hands--just a little
pick-me-up, to keep off the horrors.
